Do you have any idea about large breaches that affect well-established firms? These massive breaches come from an external source rather than an internal one. There are number of breaches that are coming in bulk and harming bigger firms, therefore they need to give priority on handling those attacks. Some biggest breaches that happened in recent years.
Marriott:-
Marriott’s Starwood hotel branch found a threat in 2018, which revealed the records of about 387 million guests with their names, gender, addresses, birthdates, and passport numbers. They did not know about this incident and it is estimated that this breach might have been started since 2014.
Facebook:-
This is a famous breach that occurred in September 2018. There were 2 blogs found in the privacy tool and one was in Facebook’s video upload software; due to these bugs, hackers managed to unveil names, email address, location, gender, relationship status, etc.
Chegg:-
Chegg is an education technology company whose data had been uncovered in 2018. Cybercriminals managed to stole customer records in millions. Things like names, addresses, email, and passwords, all were exposed leaving no privacy behind. Everything was open among all customers. It took place as attackers got success in breaking Chegg’s database encrypted algorithm.
Equifax:-
One of the most destructive breaches that occurred some years ago is Equifax’s breach where customer social security numbers, credit card numbers, addresses, birth dates, and names were hacked by criminals. It was caused due to some problem in open-source software that it was using and took 2 months in order to recognize the theft which was the quite long and worst situation.
Dun and Bradstreet:-
In 2017, a well-renowned firm of data analytics ‘Dun and Bradstreet’ also had been the victim of a massive breach where they lost customer’s personal identification like name, email address, home address, and many more to the hands of attackers. This happened due to the flaw that came from the company’s database inherited from another company that was serving as a warning to firms adding data from outsources, even when trustworthy.
All these breaches made a massive loss to the customer as well as the company. On average, a total of 257 million customers get affected by every breach. It takes around 46 days to recover from a breach.
Security breaches are a constant threat to every small and large business, whether carried out internally or externally. To improve security, money should not be given that much importance as prevention is better than cure.
